Challenge
A private research university needed to envision new uses of the first floor of the library in planning for a renovation.
Approach
I worked with a small team at brightspot strategy to conduct quantitative and qualitative user research such as a library user experience survey, visioning and user experience workshops, 1:1 interviews with stakeholders, and intercept interviews with students. From this phase we found that students were interested in learning more about the academic services available to them through the library (such as tutoring or using a design lab to develop Adobe Creative Suite skills), and that they sought more opportunities to develop their communication skills and creativity.
Solution
The findings from the user research phase led to a new approach to user services and a space design concept with increased open study space and specialty spaces where students could practice presentations and experiment with technology. My team advised the University Architect on translating the concept into a floorpan.
